The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a two hour boat ride from Sliema, over by the island of Comino, which is inhabited by only three people.

I was excited to see the famous lagoon, in a small cove with crystal clear turquoise water, so pretty that you could see the bottom, even where it was deep, and all the exotic fish and sealife.

For such a long trip to get there, it was a bit of a disappointment. The cove has been taken over entirely by tourism, and food stall after food stall pumped out raucous music like the visitors were hoping for a 90s club night rather than a natural wonder.

I wandered away from the hubbub, to try to get a feel for the remote island, and what life might be like for the three people who live there.

It was windy and sparse, with rocks and shrubbery and away from the lagoon, it had a rough beauty with glorious views over the ocean to the setting sun. I wondered what it would feel like in the dead of night, if it would be spooky, and how magnificent the stars might look with zero light pollution.

A visit to the blue lagoon was more of a visit to the island of Comino; the water was pretty, but I got more out of the trip by exploring the island, and in the end didn’t spend much time by the over-crowded lagoon at all.
