Marquis Los Cabos

Let’s meet up in Cabo, she said. So I put on my traveler superpower cape and got on the plane, and headed down to the southermost tip of Baja California. No whining. No complaining. Really truly.

Part of a double rainbow, looking east from the balcony. It rained the first day of my visit.

Mia set us up for five days in the Marquis Los Cabos resort, a no-children, high-end destination where the worst in American behavior was funneled off to lesser, more drunken environs. The Marquis showed off Mexican hospitality at its warmest, catered of course to the English speaking population as is much of the Cabo tourist strip.

Fruit served at breakfast.

A basket of pastries and coffee with a side order of view.

We spoke Spanish as much as we could, especially with Uber drivers who laughed that they had much less English skills than we had in Spanish. It was a thrill to struggle through our Spanish limitations and have fun, joke-filled conversations with a couple of drivers.

The views from the room balcony were incredible, with wide, planet-curved horizons, humpback whales spouting and breaching just offshore, and travel-brochure sunrises and sunsets. The meals at the all-inclusive restaurants were varied and surprisingly good. And I had breakfast delivered to the room early, early, so I could watch the sunrise while I ate.

Early dawn view from the balcony.

Every blue imaginable.

Mia tolerated my pointing south, telling her there was nothing other than water between us and Antarctica, some 8000 miles away. I might have told her more than a couple of times.

We spent one of our days just sitting poolside, reading our books, being served drinks and lunch, and taking a dip in the infinity pools. If you look out to sea, the whales entertain you with their frequent appearances.

Poolside ain’t a bad way to pass the day.

Looking out toward Antarctica. This beach isn't swimmable. The dropoff is immediate and the riptides will send you on your way south.
